ingmar bergman (1918–2007) was a swedish filmmaker and theatre director. he began writing scripts for svensk filmindustri in the early 1940s, and wrote the screenplay for alf sjöberg's torment (hets, 1944), which he also assistant-directed. his own first feature as director was crisis (kris, 1946), based on a danish radio play.
through the 1950s he wrote and directed films for svensk filmindustri. summer with monika (1953) and smiles of a summer night (1955) came first; smiles of a summer night was shown at the 1956 cannes film festival, where it won a prize for "best poetic humour". in 1957 he released the seventh seal and wild strawberries ten months apart. wild strawberries starred victor sjöström, bergman's silent-film idol and an early counselor at svensk filmindustri, in his final screen role.
from the early 1960s bergman worked regularly on the island of fårö. the silence (1963) and persona (1966) followed, then cries and whispers (1972), whose us distribution rights were bought by roger corman's new world pictures. scenes from a marriage (1973) was made as a six-part swedish television series and then cut into a theatrical feature. after working from munich in the late 1970s he made autumn sonata (1978), his only collaboration with ingrid bergman, and returned to sweden for fanny and alexander (1982). his last film was saraband (2003), a sequel to scenes from a marriage.
bergman also directed theatre. he led the royal dramatic theatre (dramaten) in stockholm from 1960 to 1966, and was its manager from 1963 to 1966. his cinematographers were gunnar fischer, who shot his films from port of call (1948) to the devil's eye (1960), and then sven nykvist. his recurring company of actors included max von sydow, bibi andersson, liv ullmann, ingrid thulin, gunnar björnstrand and erland josephson.
