Profile on: Victor Sjöström

victor sjöström (1879–1960) was a swedish director, screenwriter, and actor of sweden's silent-film golden age. he began acting on stage at 17, appeared in his first film in 1912 under mauritz stiller, and directed more than forty features in sweden between 1912 and 1923, several adapted from novels by selma lagerlöf.

his swedish features include ingeborg holm (1913), a man there was (terje vigen, 1917), the outlaw and his wife (1918), and the phantom carriage (körkarlen, 1921). the phantom carriage was based on lagerlöf's novel and photographed by julius jaenzon, who built its double-exposure ghost effects. sjöström often played the lead in his own films, as he did there.

in 1923 he accepted an offer from louis b. mayer and moved to hollywood, directing as victor seastrom. he who gets slapped (1924) was the first film produced entirely by the newly formed mgm and starred lon chaney, norma shearer, and john gilbert. he then directed the scarlet letter (1926) and the wind (1928), both starring lillian gish; the wind was her last silent film.

he returned to sweden, directed the english-language under the red robe (1937) in britain, and in later years worked mainly as an actor; his final screen role was the elderly professor isak borg in ingmar bergman's wild strawberries (1957).
