haim saban (born october 15, 1944) is an israeli-american media proprietor and record and television producer. he worked as a musician and promoter, produced records for the singer noam kaniel, and moved to the united states in 1983; with his partner shuki levy he supplied music and theme songs to 1980s children's television, including inspector gadget, he-man and the masters of the universe and she-ra: princess of power.
saban and levy founded saban productions in 1980; the company, later renamed saban entertainment, moved from music into television with kidd video, which nbc picked up for its 1984 saturday-morning schedule. it imported and dubbed japanese animation such as maple town and digimon, and it built american series from japanese tokusatsu footage, among them power rangers, vr troopers, masked rider and big bad beetleborgs.
in 1992 saban partnered with the marvel entertainment group on x-men: the animated series for fox kids, and in 1993 his company brought mighty morphin power rangers to the same lineup: fox kids president margaret loesch ordered 40 episodes after a test screening, and the adaptation of japan's super sentai footage premiered on august 28, 1993, generating about $1 billion in revenue by 1995. in 1996 fox children's network and saban entertainment merged into fox kids worldwide, which bought the family channel's parent company in 1997 for $1.9 billion; the channel became fox family channel in 1998.
in july 2001 saban and news corporation agreed to sell fox family worldwide to the walt disney company for $5.3 billion; the sale closed that october and the channel was renamed abc family. in august 2003 a saban-led consortium completed its purchase of a controlling stake in germany's prosiebensat.1 media from the bankrupt kirch media group for about $1.3 billion, the first time a foreigner controlled a major german broadcaster.
in 2006 a group led by saban capital group agreed to buy univision communications, the largest spanish-language media company in the united states, in a deal valued at $13.7 billion; the purchase closed in 2007 and saban chaired the company. saban brands bought the power rangers rights back from disney in 2010, and in 2018 hasbro acquired its entertainment assets. in 2019 he launched the saban music group, a los angeles record label, with a $500 million commitment.
