carl gustav jung was born in 1875. in december 1900 he became an intern at the burghölzli psychiatric hospital in zurich under eugen bleuler, who had corresponded with sigmund freud. in 1904 he published diagnostic association studies with franz riklin, and in 1905 he became a senior doctor there and a lecturer at zurich university.
his word-association experiments traced delayed responses to emotionally charged words and produced the concept of the complex; the findings appeared as studies in word association, sent to freud in 1906. the two met in vienna on 3 march 1907 and corresponded closely for six years. jung edited the psychoanalytical yearbook from 1908, sailed to the united states with freud and sándor ferenczi in 1909 for the clark university conference, and in 1910 was elected president of the international psychoanalytical association.
psychology of the unconscious (1912), his study of the transformations of the libido, divided them; jung said its publication cost him freud's friendship. freud proposed abandoning their private relationship in january 1913, and they met for the last time that september at the congress in munich. jung had left the burghölzli in 1909 for a practice at his home in küsnacht.
after the break he went through what he called his confrontation with the unconscious, recording visions in notebooks known as the black books from 1913 to 1917 and transcribing them, with paintings, into the red book, or liber novus, worked on from 1914 to about 1930. it was never meant for publication and appeared only on 7 october 2009 from w. w. norton, edited and introduced by sonu shamdasani.
psychological types (rascher verlag, zurich, 1921) set out extraversion and introversion. jung bought land at bollingen on lake zurich in 1922 and built a tower there, adding to it in 1927, 1931 and 1935. he gave the tavistock clinic lectures in london in 1935 and the terry lectures at yale in 1937, published as psychology and religion. he held a professorship of medical psychology at basel in 1943 and resigned the next year. later books include answer to job (1952); marie-louise von franz worked with him from 1933 until his death in küsnacht on 6 june 1961.
