post-production covers what happens to a film after shooting: laboratory processing, editing, optical and title work, sound editorial and mixing, visual effects and color grading.
pacific title & art studio was founded in hollywood in 1919 by leon schlesinger to make title cards for silent films, and moved into editing and post-production work when sound arrived in 1929-30. consolidated film industries was incorporated in new york in march 1924 by herbert yates and became one of the biggest laboratories in los angeles, processing negatives and printing releases for features and television under the credit "color by cfi"; technicolor acquired it in 2000 and closed the lab by 2008.
sound work was often tied to the process that created it. todd-ao was founded in 1953 by mike todd and robert naify to promote the 65mm/70mm todd-ao widescreen process; after todd died in 1958 it narrowed to audio post-production, buying glenn glenn sound in 1986.
the effects and sound houses of the 1970s were built around single films. industrial light & magic was founded by george lucas in may 1975 to make star wars, starting in a warehouse in van nuys. skywalker sound began in 1975 as sprocket systems in san anselmo, moved after a flood in 1982, and took its present name at skywalker ranch in 1987.
digital work moved the sector again. the digital cinema initiatives specification, first released on 20 july 2005, standardized 2k and 4k jpeg 2000 projection and the digital cinema package that replaced release prints.
