john kricfalusi (born september 9, 1955) is a canadian animator, illustrator and voice actor. he moved to los angeles in 1978 and worked for filmation on fat albert and the cosby kids, the new adventures of flash gordon, the tom and jerry comedy show and gilligan's planet, then for hanna-barbera. his first independent cartoon, the short ted bakes one, was made with bill wray in 1981. his stated main influence is warner bros. director bob clampett.
in 1987 he was senior director on the first season of mighty mouse: the new adventures, a cbs saturday-morning revival of the terrytoons character produced by ralph bakshi; the crew was split into four teams that worked largely independently, and the show is considered a forerunner of creator-driven television cartoons. kricfalusi did not return for the second season.
in december 1989 he co-founded the studio Spümcø in los angeles with bob camp, jim smith and lynne naylor. the ren & stimpy show premiered on nickelodeon on august 11, 1991, after the pilot "big house blues". kricfalusi produced and directed the first two seasons and voiced ren höek, mr. horse and other characters. nickelodeon removed him in september 1992 and moved production to games animation; the series ran three further seasons without him. Spümcø later made the björk music video "i miss you" (1997) and, for the internet, the goddamn george liquor program (1997).
the ripping friends, created with jim smith, premiered on fox kids on september 22, 2001. ren & stimpy "adult party cartoon", written and directed by kricfalusi, premiered on spike tv in june 2003; six episodes were produced, three aired, and the full set was issued on dvd in 2006. he closed Spümcø in july 2005 and was later a guest animator on two simpsons episodes, in 2011 and 2015.
